Client: Birmingham City Football Club
Project: St Andrews Stadium Future Vision
Budget: Undisclosed
Status: Feasibility

When Birmingham City Football Club shortlisted us to look at a future vision for the historic football ground St Andrews Stadium it was both an honour and a privilege. The clubs vision is to redevelop the outdated Main Stand to provide the facilities required for a modern football stadium. The brief included increasing the overall capacity of the ground by up to 8,000 fans, provide players facilities, gymnasium, VIP boxes and 100 plus pitchside hotel rooms.

Football is a passionate game, with English stadiums having atmosphere’s like no other. Modern day football stadiums are cathedrals of worship, so it was important to come up with an iconic concept that embraced this. The big idea was not just to replace the old stand with a shiny new one but to wrap the entire stadium in a wall of scarfs! so that architecturally it was unified.

‘As part of pre-match build-ups, or during matches, fans will create a ‘scarf wall’ in which all
supporters in a section of the stadium will stretch out their scarves above their heads with
both hands, creating an impressive ‘wall’ of colour.’ Wikipedia

The scheme was presented to members of the board in 2011 and was featured on
both the club website and Sky Sports News.
